Page Thirty Four: Fox's Town

I was ready this time for Fox to take me by the hand and lead me down the hall.  People liked her, so if I just let her level-set our relationship - or lack there of, as the case may be - then things should be fine.  Maybe.  Or at least, I was willing to let that line of reasoning have a chance.  Briefly.
But as I sat in chemistry, taking notes on bond structures, molecular polarization, and isotopic conditions, I kept thinking also about the risks in letting Fox completely set the tone of our relationship - or rather, our friendship.  Taking the path of least resistance now could only lead to problems later on for one or both of us.  Her little Fox molecule only seeking a single bond of friendship while I on the other hand, have a much stronger attraction... and pretty much giving up on the atomic analogy there because I could not imagine if going anywhere but weird.
I steeled myself in the passing to mathematics and though I kept right beside her, I kept my hands to myself rather than holding hers.  I also kept - or hoped I kept - a pleasant smile on my face but either way, Fox seemed to take it all in stride.  After all, side by side, the leading me by my hand would technically be superfluous.
We slowed as we approached my classroom and Fox conspiratorially advised, "The trick is to study how she works the problems.  There are nuances to the way she shows her work and..." As we came to a stop, she looked side to side, "I think she takes it as like a personal offence if anyone has their own way of doing it that she doesn't get."
I looked at Fox, processing this advice against everything I had witnessed in her class, the things she had said, the way she claimed everything I did was wrong... "She... She's insecure?"
Fox nodded, then changed subjects.  "I have to get to work a little early for prep, so... well you can find your way to lunch on your own, I am sure."  Then she winked and was off.  I caught myself smiling and watching her spiky hair bob off in the distance until is was consumed by the river of bodies, all shuffling to their specific destinations.  In other words, about three strides, but I looked on just the same before turning into the room and taking my seat.
So subtle were most of the differences that I had not really noticed at first but now what Fox had suggested I look for them, they were as neon signs floating in her sea of dull, drab, monotony that was her lecture.  It was still going to take a bit of work to adopt her practices into my work, but I figured it was doable.
Then, geeky as it sounds, I spent almost the entire lunch hour in the library.  Not just because libraries are cool, but I was still driven to learn as much about Midwest Textiles and Boss Johnson as I could in a know-thy-enemy sort of way.  A lot of it was making notes for things to look up later, at home, via the computer.  So I made notes on his companies and their subsidiaries, and on any major town events or changes.  There were a lot of things to go over - way too many to research in the library.  Besides, I knew I need to talk to Mom about how she does all the stuff she does to ferret out the root of an issue
I mean honestly, why would a textile company own its own security company?  It would seem like they would just, well, rent a cop.
Notes in hand, figuratively, I ran, figuratively, up to the quartermaster's room to scarf my lunch before band and....
    Mags and James... kissing.
    "Oh my... I'm so sorry!"
    "No, no.  It's okay, DG."
"The door was open!  I just-"
"Really, DG, it was just a kiss.  No, stay; James was just leaving anyway."
I halted my retreat, hand still on the door where it was poised to close on my way back the way I had come.  "Oh.... Okay."
James said 'hi' on his way hurriedly past.  Well, he said something more like, "H-h-h-hi," but I do not want to sound mean.
I looked back a Mags, turning loose, slowly, of the door, looking at her fading blush.
She smiled.  "Sam said you were in the library.  I forget this school even has one."
"He was there?  I didn't see him, but then, I wasn't looking for him."
Mags stood up from the table she was leaning against.  "He does kind of blend in with bookshelves.  I think it's the shirt."
I agreed absentmindedly before realising she was making a joke.
"Are you," she began, with honest and sudden concern in her tone, "okay?  You seem a little... what's the word..."
"Flavoured?" I offered, some line in some movie having turned me on to the usage that way.
Mags nodded with a shrug, "Something like that."
She smiled warm as ever as she walked past.  I put my hand on her shoulder, unsure exactly what I was going to say or what I wanted.  On the tip of my tongue were the words 'don't go,' but I could not really ask her to stay.  I had not expected her to be up here as it was.  But then she was looking at me with that "What?" expression on her face; pleasant, but curious.  I shook my head dismissively, dropping my hand.
Her expression changed from questioning to understanding, then - something else.  She looked at me with no humor and said quietly, "Be careful what you look for.  You just may find it."
Then her expression returned to normal and she left the room and left me replaying the exchange in my mind, again and again, making sure it had really happened and what she may have meant by those particular.  Concern abated my appetite.

[I hope you have enjoyed this installment]
I am both encouraged and daunted(?) by some of the new watchers and readers I have picked up. I mean, I want people to read them and I think it is great that some people have been and still are reading them, and it is great that more people are finding and reading them. I like that people are reading my story. But when it was my friends who I kinda made read them (haha) and just a stray lurker or two, that was one thing, but lately more people are reading /my/ story. The emphasis 'my' because that is the daunting part. I am responsible for it. So that feels weird.

Anyhoo, 34&35 kind on blur into one in my mind and I almost want them to all be on the same page, but ... no. They are too long together for that.

But, they are logically separate as well - oh, what am I doing talking about next week's already.

If this is the first one you are reading, by all means please stop and read the first one [link] first, then proceed in order, if you would be so kind.

And if you like it/them, let me know.  If you do not, I would still like to know.  If you are completely indifferent and do not feel it is worth your time to comment, that's okay, you can let me know that as well.
